The Paris Biofoundry at the iGEM 2025 Grand Jamboree

The Paris Biofoundry was honored to participate in the iGEM 2025 Grand Jamboree, one of the world’s largest international gatherings dedicated to synthetic biology, as well as in the iGEM Responsibility Conference 2025, a forum focused on ethics, governance, and societal engagement in engineering biology.

Organized annually by the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) Foundation, the iGEM competition brings together thousands of students worldwide who design, build, and test innovative synthetic biology projects addressing global challenges in health, environment, and sustainability. The Grand Jamboree represents the culmination of this international program and serves as a global platform for scientific exchange, interdisciplinary dialogue, and forward-looking discussions on the future of bioengineering.

During the SB 8.0 Conference session, Professor Stéphane Lemaire, Director of the Paris Biofoundry, presented his vision of how synthetic biology—and particularly microalgal innovation—can contribute to building a more sustainable and resilient future. His intervention highlighted the transformative potential of automated bioengineering infrastructures in accelerating discovery, standardizing workflows, and enabling scalable biological solutions.

In parallel, the Paris Biofoundry was proud to see Ariel Lindner, member of the UNESCO International Bioethics Committee (IBC), iGEM Board Director, and member of the Paris Biofoundry, contribute to the workshop entitled “Strategies for Community Engagement on Mirror Life” at the iGEM Responsibility Conference 2025.

This high-level session brought together leading voices in science, ethics, and governance to reflect on how researchers, institutions, and communities can collaboratively shape the discourse surrounding some of synthetic biology’s most radical and emerging frontiers. Ariel Lindner’s participation, in his dual capacity as an international bioethics expert and representative of the Paris Biofoundry, underscored the importance of responsible innovation, transparency, and inclusive dialogue within the global synthetic biology ecosystem.

Through its engagement in both scientific and ethical discussions at iGEM 2025, the Paris Biofoundry reaffirms its commitment to advancing cutting-edge bioengineering while promoting openness, societal responsibility, and international collaboration.

We are proud to contribute to a community where creativity, technological excellence, and ethical reflection converge to shape the future of synthetic biology.
